costume jewelry

Costume jewelry needs to make a come back, and I’m gonna stream roll that revival.

I’ve been ebayin’.  Not to an extreme, but yesterday I got the wild butt hair to look up some costume jewelry.  See what’s on the market in terms of cheap and gawdy adornments.  I was pleasantly surprised and now have a stash of items on ‘My Ebay,’ just waiting for auction time to wind down and me to pick them up.  Then proudly wear my outdated, yet glamorously retro faux jewelry around town with pride and panache.  That’s right.  PANACHE.

Because to pull of the horribly cheap costume jewelry style is a talent not acquired.  I don’t know if I own this talent, but I’m gonna find out.

My grandmothers have a city dump’s worth of jewelry, a carefully mixed palate of real stones and fake, I’m sure.  I LOVE my grandmothers’ jewelry.  I love jewelry, not that you’d know ‘cause I don’t wear any.  Just my bling from the Man (I call it bling, but it’s a necklace, is there ‘bling’ parameters?) and a thin silver ring band.  My great grandmother’s jewelry is kept in a very large stand up jewelry case.  That’s lined.  In real velvet.  Oh the glamour!  It left a deep imprint in my little girl brain.  That imprint can only be filled with rings and brooches and earrings necklaces and bracelets that coordinate and should be matched appropriately to your ensemble.  I remember her getting ready, even just for Early Bird special dinners, jewelry was always worn.  We’d pour over rings and necklaces and pins that would go with her pant suits.  Ah, so vintage.  I still dream of the day that my jewelry will warrant a velvet lined stand up jewelry case.  Soon, my dear, soon.

I like that.  I appreciate a woman that spends time and energy to be coordinated and classy.  Nothing says classy like a well chosen brooch.  I think it takes an outfit to the next level.  Anyone can wear a suit, but to accessorize a suit, well that takes effort.  And I don’t put nearly enough effort into my appearance.  I don’t want to just look good, I want to achieve that ‘put together’ look.  Which brings me back to costume jewelry.  I’m far too young to be owning real jewels.  I don’t even *gasp, shock and AWE!* like diamonds - I find them over priced and generic.  Coupled with my insane cheapness, I’m a costume jeweler’s dream.

And since I don't like, nor mesh with the current fashion trends, I'm vintaging myself.  As in I'm moving my appearance to a more classic and classy appearance.  An appearance that necessitates costume jewelry.

Now I just wait for my chosen jewels.

I understand the love for the costume jewelry. When my gramma died I inherited quite a few choice pieces from the 30s and 40s. My favorite is an asymmetrical clasp bracelet that's clear with tiny squares of gold leaf inside. It's the most amazing thing in my posession.
